SOLVING THE FENG SHUI ISSUES IN YOUR HOME

When you enter your home, how do you feel? Is it comfortable and inviting? Is it bright and clean? Is there a space in your home that allows you to feel relaxed or perhaps inspired or is it just the opposite? Essentially your home is a direct reflection of YOU.

In these times of change we are being called to address the patterns that aren’t working for us anymore especially in our homes. Recognizing this and making the proper adjustments can shift your perspective on the world and help create positive change in your everyday life. This approach is called Feng Shui. To explain this practice further we partnered with our friend and local astrologer, Shannon Aganza of Moon Gathering. We sat down with Shannon to chat about some Feng Shui issues we’re having in our own homes. In our conversation she helps solve these issues while diving deeper into the benefits and importance of good Feng Shui in our spaces.

“Your space is a living entity that will support YOU”

Shannon Aganza

Listen to our entire conversation below.

What is Feng Shui?

“Feng Shui is essentially the perfect balance in nature… A harmony between how nature flows outside and how nature flows through our body.”

Shannon Aganza

In other words, if there is good energy in your home there will be good energy in your life. There are two factors that need to work together simultaneously for this to work, the bagua (a Feng Shui map that reflects the floor plan of your home) and the five elements (earth, water, wood, fire and metal). Feng Shui works to balance the five elements in each area of the bagua.

Feel free to print out the bagua map below and place it over the floor plan of your home. Situate your front door at the bottom of the map.

Solving The Feng Shui Issues In Our Homes

Elaina’s Feng Shui Issue:

What is the best way to create a home office in my master bedroom?

The bedroom is not the most ideal spot for a home office. The bedroom should be reserved for the couple (if you are a couple) and for sound sleeping. The office, on the other hand, needs to feel energizing for creative productivity.

Solution:

Situate your desk in the prosperity corner of the room. This is also known as the wealth section on the bagua map and is a great spot for any workspace. The knowledge corner would also be a good option for placement.

Place a plant between your desk and your bed. Elevate it on top of a stool. The plant will act as a barrier separating your work space from your sleeping space. It’s important to separate the two worlds. Also make sure the plant is appropriate for the room you are placing it in. Certain plants are good for the bedroom as their oxygen output helps you sleep while others are best in the living room or kitchen instead.

Imprint the number 11 somewhere on your desk. Even if you write the number on the underside of the desk. The number 11 represents harmony between two things. In this case we’re creating harmony between the work space and the sleeping space.

Place a mirror near your desk. Mirrors help a space to feel bigger and brighter and depending on the placement of the door can allow you to see who enters. They also attract an abundant amount of energy which is perfect for your workspace. Just make sure the mirror if not reflecting your bed in anyway (another issue explained in the audio interview).

Jess’s Feng Shui Issue:

I don’t have a designated dining space in my small apartment, is it okay that we eat all of our meals in the living room?

The first thing to do is reconstruct your thoughts. Naturally we think of the dining room as a space for eating meals and connecting with family, however the purpose of a space can change depending on your needs. There are technically no rules when it comes to the purpose of a space in your home. Therefore, recognize the living room as your eating space instead of feeling like it isn’t the right space in which to eat because of how you’ve labeled it.

Solution:

This is where color comes in. Add something yellow and something green on or beneath the place where you eat in the living room. The color yellow symbolizes the earth, food and digestion. The color green symbolizes energy and family. This could be as simple as adding a book with these colors in it or a green plant in a yellow pot. Adding these colors will help establish your living room space as your eating space.

If you enjoy watching TV while you eat be mindful of what you’re watching while you’re eating. When we eat we are nourishing ourselves. Try not to watch things that are violent or scary or disturbing in anyway. Stick to the shows that are up lifting. By watching something uplifting and happy while we eat we feel good overall.

“Meal time is cohesive connection time”

Shannon Aganza

Susanna’s Feng Shui Issue:

The front of my house faces east, can I paint my front door black?

In the Feng Shui practice the appropriate color for anything to the east is red, however black is a great color to paint your front door. Black is a combination of all the colors and symbolizes career.

Solution:

It’s important to incorporate red in someway to your entry since it is facing east. Before you paint your front door black, paint a small section of the door red. Paint over this section with black.

You can also add a welcome mat that contains red or even plant something that has red in it.

Jess’s Feng Shui Issue:

I have a mirror hanging over my fireplace that faces my front door.

This is considered bad Feng Shui because the chi (the universal energy in your home) comes in the front door and reflects off of the mirror and goes right back out the front door. The chi never enters the home.

Solution:

There are a few things to consider here. Is the mirror directly in line with your front door? If so, consider putting a chandelier that has crystals on it or install a fan somewhere between the mirror and the door to help the chi bounce around the room. In other words allowing energy to move throughout the space. If the mirror is not directly in line with the front door, rather it is slightly offset, this is considered good Feng Shui.

Simple Tips To Create Good Feng Shui In Your Home

Bali Interiors_E_3.jpg

CLEAN YOUR ENTRY

It’s always best to start with the entry. The entrance to your home is how energy enters your home and ultimately your life. This space should be clear of any debris and well lit to allow good energy to flow through your space. A lot of items tend to collect at the entrance of our homes. Take some time to clear this space (interior and exterior). Sweep, dust out the mat and allow for easy traffic flow at the entry.

In addition, add something that speaks to the water element, like a fountain. Most of our front doors are rectangular and to balance this shape we need something round. Round shapes symbolize water. This can be as simple as placing a round pot at the entrance to your home.

CLEAN YOUR WINDOWS
Let’s be honest when was the last time you cleaned your windows? Clean windows bring in more sunlight. Sunlight naturally energizes us and wakes us up. Sunlight also renders color. The more sunlight we bring into our homes the clearer we can see everything and the happier we feel.

REPRESENT THE FIVE ELEMENTS

Use color to represent the five elements in each space of the bagua. Refer to the bagua map above for color reference.

DECLUTTER

“Clutter is cancer to the house and it can metastasize to other things in the home”

Shannon Aganza

Clutter in the home is clutter in the mind. The best way to create good energy and good Feng Shui in the home is to declutter and get organized. Sure this will take a bit of work, but you’ll find that it can also be therapeutic. I’m sure there’s a few places you can think of right now that need a little love. Declutter away!

Below are two great reads with some of the best strategies to help you get organized and find clarity.

The Declutter Code, was written by our good friend Yvette Bowlin and if you haven’t read it already, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.

We understand this may be a lot of information. Take your time analyzing your home. Ask yourself the important questions - does my home make me feel safe, peaceful, inspired, happy or joyful? If you answered no, then take the time to dive deeper into the parts of your home that are not serving you. Curating a balanced and well designed home will change your life.

Good Feng Shui and good design go hand in hand.

“Design is a legitimate way to change your life”

Shannon Aganza

HOW WE'RE COPING

How’s everyone doing? Are you hanging in there? We’re now on week… six… maybe seven of quarantine? We’ve lost count. Does anyone even know what day it is? It’s like ground hog day over here. Wake up, workout, shower, make breakfast, start the work day, make lunch, end the work day, have a glass of wine, make dinner, go to bed and REPEAT.

We’re all learning to cope with this new way of life in different ways. Maybe it’s taking time out of the day for yourself and practicing self-care, maybe it’s working out through an online class or maybe it’s just making sure you stay in touch with loved ones through virtual platforms. There are no rules here. There is no right way or wrong way to handle this experience.

This is also a time for learning. Learning a little more about yourself and what truly makes YOU happy. We’re learning to take things day by day. One day we feel uber productive and ready to take on the world. Other days we feel less motivated, maybe frustrated and angry. Know that it’s okay to feel whatever emotion your feeling. We feel it too and you’re not alone. If you need some help navigating all of this we’re sharing how we’re coping below.

Mindless Creativity

I haven't picked up a coloring book in ages. I can't remember how long it's been. There was a trend of coloring books that hit the scene awhile back and I do remember thinking, "that's cool" but I never jumped on the bandwagon. It wasn't until I found myself working from home, at my dining room table sourcing tile for a fun project and was reaching out to the vendor for samples. As we emailed back and forth, I saw at the bottom of their email signature was a link to a coloring book featuring their most beautiful tiles. This made me SO happy to see! I quickly downloaded, and printed the entire collection. I've been coloring since! While watching movies, relaxing in bed or just chilling on the sofa I’m coloring. It's mindless, keeps me creative and makes sitting on my booty not so depressing!

Download here if you'd like to join me!

Drinking and Supporting

I'm not the biggest fan of promoting tons of drinking during such an uncertain time, but a few glasses of wine throughout the week has REALLY helped me cope. If you suffer from anxiety or depression, you may want to skip this paragraph. I know I'm not the only one. And if I'm going to drink as much as I have been, I feel much better doing so while supporting a small, local, female business woman.

Leucadia local, Erin Callahan, represents a wine portfolio of some of the best sustainable wines from small production wineries dotted around the world. Many of these wines can be found at local restaurants throughout San Diego that have been unfortunately forced to close due to this virus. Erin is on a mission to keep these winemakers doing what they do best by fueling our quarantine-ridden selves with a local wine club available for pick up or drop off.

If you’re interested in joining the club you can contact Erin by email: erin.garberandco@gmail.com

or DM her on instagram @erinyumyums

What To Watch, What To Listen To

Anyone else struggling to find something to watch or listen to that everyone in your household agrees on? We find ourselves mindlessly flipping through the Apple TV apps to find the right thing to watch. My husband and I are the worst at compromising and I couldn't take it anymore. So I took a tip from one of my fav Instagram followers Elsie Larson and we started a music jar. This is a great idea and we even added a movie star jar to our house. Every week we pick a musician and an actor and for that week we listen to their tunes and we watch their movies! It's been amazing watching some of the classics and I love learning more about the musicians I thought I knew. Try it! You’ll love it! It’s perfect for the kids too. They will learn all the classics!

How Elaina’s Coping

Meditation

Before this all happened, meditation was my way of grounding myself and it remains now more than ever my way of remaining sane. Uncertainty is the most certain thing there is in life if you think about it. We have no control over what is going to happen but we can control how we choose to perceive it.  So, I try to allow myself to let go and surrender to this truth. Easier said than done especially in times like this but I try. That’s all we can do. My meditation practice is the one sure way I know I can regulate my breath, calm my nerves, open my heart and set my intentions.

Cleaning

I have two very active and strong willed boys close in age. Now that I’m their “teacher” and I’m trying to work and run a house I have very little time to relish in any kind of down time. Things are loud and messy all day long. Each moment is filled with a task of some sort and the days are flying by and I go to bed exhausted but one steady task that gives me so much satisfaction is cleaning. After the boys go to bed I go through the house and clean things up so when I wake up there is some sense of order before the storm hits. I channel the Marie Kondo in me and I zen out on doing the dishes, sweeping, dusting, fluffing etc. It’s my way of trying to create some order in the chaos.

Talking To Friends

I believe connecting with people is what makes the world go round. When I chat with a friend I love to hear about their perspective on all of this, what they’re doing that’s different, how they’re managing the madness of homeschooling or for a lot of my friends just being at home alone… sharing experience with people I love and trust helps me articulate my own experience and make sense of what this all means and where I hope to go from here.

How Jen’s Coping

Diving Deep Into Self Care

I am a huge advocate of self-care. If we don't take care of ourselves, who will? Your own self-care can change depending on what we need the most in that moment. Right now I am finding it shows up in simple ways, such as staying hydrated, eating nutrient-rich foods, exercising, taking breaks from the news and social media and simply resting when I am tired. I'm really allowing myself the space to feel what I am feeling, observing it and not being so critical of myself. Riding the wave of change and allowing myself to trust the process.

Leaving Room For Self- Expression

I'll admit my outfits these days don’t vary much from workout attire and not a touch of effort went into my hair for at least a week when this all started. But if this change in lifestyle has taught me anything it's that this is time to celebrate our most authentic selves. For me, that happens to be getting dressed! Mixing up outfits, trying on old pieces, the "save for later” items. Heck, the other night I put on my cowboy boots while doing laundry. Even just adding jewelry to the mix makes me feel like I am connecting to my personal style. It's a simple reminder that no matter how scary and uncertain things can feel at times we have the ability to make the most of the present moment.

Create Sacred Space

Light the candle, blast the playlist, water those plant babies and cherish your space. I have such a deep gratitude for this space my husband and I share. Does it look straight out of pintrest? Nope! It's a rental that was probably last updated in the 80's, but I've never been more thankful for a simple apartment. It has sentimental touches like my Grandma's old desk that is now my new workplace. I suddenly notice and appreciate the art and crystals I've collected over the years that make the space feel personal and grounding.

How Jess Is Coping

Sticking To A Routine

In this time of uncertainty there is one thing that I CAN control… the decisions I make in my day: what I do and how I pass the time. I made a commitment to myself when all of this started to workout every day. It helps that I’ve been challenged by my family who also made this promise. We’ve all decided to workout every day at home and at the end of every day we text each other that we’ve completed this task. The idea that I am held accountable for this has forced me to create a routine for myself. There are a few things that are certain during this time… the sun will rise and the sun will set. What you do with the hours in between is completely up to you. This thought is constantly running through my mind. Everyday I wake with the sun, complete my daily workout, enjoy my morning coffee on the couch and go through my daily routine. If I stray from my routine at all I don’t feel as productive. It’s a funny thing, this time at home has made me realize that my days are just as full as they were before all of this started and sticking to a routine has helped create a sense of normalcy in my days.

Staying In Touch

As humans we are social beings and need interaction to survive. I’ve never appreciated the internet more than I do now. Having the ability to talk to my family and friends through virtual chat rooms and FaceTiming has helped me maintain my sanity. Although my family lives 3,000 miles away they don’t feel so far away when I’m able to see them through my screen in real time. I look forward too our scheduled weekly dinner meals and game nights at the end of a long work day. During this time at home, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on what’s most important in my life and who is most important. I’ve reached out to friends that I haven’t spoken to in a few months, if not years, and I’ve kept in touch with those that matter most to me. If you’ve been thinking of reaching out to a friend or family member, now is the time. There is not ONE person who isn’t effected by this. Send a message or a package to a friend. Let the people you love the most know and stay in touch.

Listening To Music

If I was stranded on an island and I could only bring one thing, I’d bring some form of music to listen to. Not one day goes by without music playing in our house. I start my mornings with a workout playlist, I work throughout the day to a playlist and end my day cooking dinner to a playlist.

“A world without music is just a world full of noises that don’t make sense” - Isaac Saylor

I honestly don’t know what I would do during this time without this universal language. I’ve had good days and bad days during this time. Music has kept me grounded through all of my emotions.

These are just a few ways that we, as a team, are coping. This is a time to slow down and appreciate what’s most important in our lives. Live authentically. If your reading this right now, write down a few things that have helped you cope during this time. Remember to LAUGH, CRY and HEAL in whatever way helps you though all of this.

A NOTE FROM THE SISTERS: HOW WE'RE FEELING RIGHT NOW

We’ve all been trying to process this past week and the rate at which things are changing. This is new to us. We’ve never experienced this in our lifetime and it’s bringing up a lot of emotion in all of us.

On the one hand, it’s unsettling. There are a lot of uncertainties. How long will this last? Are we safe? Are we overreacting? It’s tough to know what to believe.

On the other hand, I have to admit, I’ve enjoyed the last two days. I’ve been at home with my kids and my husband, and we’re all just taking it easy. We’re slowing down. We’re taking care of ourselves. And we’re spending time together. Maybe the world needed this to happen.

So, we’re checking the news, and we’re talking to our network of friends and family. Trying to make sense of these changing times. And yes, we have no idea what’s going to happen from one day to the next. But isn’t that always the truth?

There are moments when fear creeps in. That’s normal. We have a choice in what we do with that fear. Fear is its own pandemic, and we must be careful. I have to be strong for my kids. If they sense fear in me, it rocks their little world. So, I choose to remain positive. I acknowledge the fear, but I don’t allow it to paralyze me. There are more productive things to do.

Now I’m trying to determine how I’m going to work and homeschool my kids at the same time. Honestly, I’m curious what’s going to come of all of this. There are a few things I know for sure: we’re being called to slow down, we’re being called to take care of our bodies and our minds, we’re being called to support each other. These are all beautiful things. Good things will come from this. This I know.

Screen Shot 2020-03-15 at 5.30.43 PM.png

My sister and I were raised to find solutions to problems, to find ways to make things better. We were raised to see the good in people. So, it is in this space that we choose to remain. We’ll be sending all of you good vibes and share the ways that we’re using this time to be mindful and creative. Now is the time to be creative. It’s the creative minds that direct change, so let’s band together and be that change. Let’s turn this crisis into something beautiful: an opportunity to evolve as individuals, as a community, and as a species.

During this time, we want this space to be a forum for ideas and communication. We have ideas and insights. You have ideas and insights. Let’s get them together.

We’re working on a few follow-up blog posts with information on the following subjects – let us know if you have your own insights, and also what you’d like to learn more about:

Staying Clean and Cozy at Home

HOW TO GET THE LOOK- MID-CENTURY VIBES

Our intention was to keep this install very simple. We chose to style the island with a large glass vase with dried branches instead of colorful florals. We also styled the countertops with just a few simple, but beautiful cutting boards. And we dressed the shelves in local pottery from both Clay and Craft and North County Tile and Stone. We loved how the neutral tones of the local pottery added a nice texture to the design. In this particular home we wanted the design and architecture to speak for itself, hence the simplicity. However, by adding a rich pop of color on the bar stools from Hati Home this really helped pulled this look together!

Overall, keeping the space simple and monochromatic was the goal. We love how the design turned out and we love the simple styling. Keep scrolling and see how you can accomplish this same look!

A FRESH START AT HOME WITH THE SISTERS

Learn a new language, travel somewhere on your bucket list, eat healthier… these are just a few resolutions we make for ourselves at the start of a new year. Sure, it’s important to make goals for yourself, but what about your home? Your home is a reflection of your personality and a clean, healthy home nourishes your well being! In addition to making new goals and resolutions for ourselves we need to create the same for our home. Spend some extra time cleaning certain areas in our home that are often neglected or rearrange pieces of furniture to create new perspective and appreciation. Set intentions for yourself AND your home this year!

Susanna’s Suggestions

HOUSE CLEARING

I light a fire in my house! HA! Yes, you heard that right! I light a cleansing fire in my house during the first new moon of the year. This is the perfect way to cleanse your space, set intentions for the new year and recharge your home!

To learn more about house clearings and how to do one in your own home CLICK HERE.

In addition, I clean all the crystals in my home. I set them outside for the night during the new moon to allow them to recharge.

To learn more about crystals in your home and how to clean them CLICK HERE.

After I complete both of these tasks it’s like taking a breath of fresh air. My home feels lighter and a sense of clean energy fills my home! It’s the perfect way to start the year!

WINTER CLEANING

When the Christmas decorations come down, it’s the perfect time to do a little “Spring cleaning” or even better “Winter cleaning”. Dusting, vacuuming, washing sofa cushions and pillows, ultimately doing a deeper cleanse of your home than normal. Getting into all the nitty gritty is a pain, but your home will thank you and look brand spankin’ new when it’s all said and done! I know I always feel so much better when my house is nice and clean!

Don’t forget about your work space. I came into the office to do a deep clean during the holiday break! I reorganized and cleaned out nooks and crannies that needed a little love in our office! It’s always so nice to come back after a holiday to a clean desk!

IMG_5753_web.jpg

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

I received a number of new home decor items for Christmas and it was a great opportunity to replace the old with the new. I have yet to try the whole “Marie Kondo - Does this spark joy?” concept, but even then I’ve never had a hard time getting rid of shit! HA!

DISCUSS YOUR GOALS

Something a little more personal, but my husband and I always have a chat over coffee about our goals as individuals and as a couple. We don’t do anything fancy, like writing them down or make vision boards. Those boards seem to always find themselves in the closet, so we keep it simple. It’s important and special for us to discuss our goals and resolutions verbally so we are both on the same page!

Elaina’s Suggestions

CLOSET CLEANING

At the start of the new year I like to clean out all of the closets and cabinets in our house. Not only do I clean out my bedroom closet and get rid of items I haven’t worn in a while, I also go through my bathroom closets, the hallway closets and kitchen pantries! It feels so go to start the year with a clean wardrobe and cabinets!

CLEANSING YOUR BODY

Next I hit the refrigerator and start the year with a healthy diet! The refrigerator, itself, is always a place that gets a little neglected during my cleaning routine. At the beginning of the year I clean out the entire refrigerator, scrub down all of the shelves and organize everything inside.

In addition, I like to start the new year with a health cleanse. This month (January) I’m doing the Medical Medium’s Liver Cleanse to kick start my body for the new year and give it a break from all the indulgences that built up over the holidays. It’s a great preventative and essential for your body! Your body needs a little break sometimes and starting the new year with a cleanse is a no brainer for me!

REORGANIZE YOUR SPACE

I went through each room in my home and moved things around. Sometimes it’s nice to try things in new places. Moving furniture or decor around moves the energy in your space and makes you feel differently about certain spots or items in your home.

This is also a great opportunity to write down things you’d like to change in your home and start to plan on how you’d like to execute those ideas. Maybe it’s renovating a bathroom or upgrading your kitchen in some way. Maybe it’s as simple as buying new bedding for your master bedroom. Personally I like to create this list and write everything down so I have something physical to work towards and a goal to keep myself to!

SETTING THE TABLE WITH THE SISTERS

We grew up in a family that has been entertaining since the beginning of time. In fact, we grew up in a family of famous entertainers such as movie star, Ramon Navarro. If you can believe it, our family used to throw massive parties at his home in Hollywood. In fact, our grandmother from Mexico City would host weekly Sunday dinners at our family house in LA. You’d see people playing the piano, others dancing in the living room, kids running around and the ladies in the kitchen.

We entertain without even realizing it sometimes. It’s in our blood. We’ve been raised to know how to slap together a homemade party. Whether it’s last minute or well-planned out we’re seasoned at it and it’s part of who we are. We’re used to grabbing items from around the house, picking flowers from the garden and throwing together a table setting for our guests! Spending time with our family and friends is so important to us, and that’s probably the Mexican and Irish in us. Both ethnicity’s are well known for hospitality.

This month we teamed up with EULA Magazine to set the table “sister-style”. Instead of your traditional Thanksgiving table setting we wanted to bring you a beautiful Fall brunch setting with techniques for sustainable decor that can be used all year round!

CRYSTALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES IN YOUR HOME

CRYSTALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES IN YOUR HOME

Is there something in your life or space you’ve been wanting to shift or change? Is there something you need more clarity or vision on? Crystals are the perfect catalyst to create that energy in your space. This month we sat down with our good friend and astrologer, Shannon Aganza, of Moon Gathering. She is a professional astrologer and holds a wealth of knowledge when it comes to crystals and their properties. We’ve known Shannon for over 20 years and she has guided us through every major event in our lives and especially in our business.

As the seasons change and we set new intention for ourselves and in our home, we thought what better person to help us translate this information, but Shannon. In this blog we’ll be focusing on certain crystals and their properties in your home, where to use them, what benefits they provide and how to clean them.

One of the easiest ways to clear ourselves or our homes is to utilize the powers of our mineral friends; crystals. Crystals have living properties. They are beautiful in nature, therefore they look great in your home, but also serve a purpose.

“The size and color of the crystal is secondary to it’s geometric shape” - Shannon Aganza

IMG_4475_web.jpg

Black Tourmaline

When you want to create a clear environment and living space Tourmaline is the perfect crystal to use. Tourmaline acts as a filtration crystal. If you need to clear your head or get rid of negative energy, seek out a Tourmaline crystal. Keep in mind it comes in all different shapes and colors. You’ll notice it’s very long and sharp in nature and perfectly designed to pierce through the problem. Tourmaline is great to place under your bed because when you are sleeping you’re detoxing. You can also place it at the entrance of your home, as visitors enter they will get a little filtration bath. Place this crystal anywhere you are trying to clear or get rid of certain energy. Tourmaline is also really good to place near technology, such as computers or TVs to clear and absorb all the negative energy.

For those who live in Southern California we have Tourmaline mines all around us. If you are looking for a beautiful piece of Tourmaline search locally!

IMG_4498_web.jpg

Pyrite

Once you’ve cleared your space with Tourmaline, you’ll want to welcome some prosperity into your home. Pyrite is perfect to help bring wealth and abundance into your life or space. You should place Pyrite in the left most corner of your home, which is your prosperity space on the Feng Shui map. As you walk in your front door, point your hand to the left corner of your home. This is the ideal spot to place Pyrite. You can also place pyrite in your work place or home office to amplify good vibes. It’s also one of the easiest crystals to get.

Below is an example of a simple Feng Shui map. Think of where you want to bring order into your life and focus on that space.

IMG_4480_web.jpg

Lapis

Lapis is royal blue in color which makes it one of the most beautiful crystals and is considered a high spiritual stone. The ancients would associate Lapis with spiritual sight. They would make pigment out of the stone and wear it as eye make up to create vision. Place Lapis in your home where you want to see or visualize change.

Fluorite

Fluorite comes in a number of different colors including blues, greens and purples, however purple is the most common because of it’s chakra hierarchy. You can tell Fluorite apart from other stones because of it’s geometric like square shapes - you’ll notice it has a lot of right angles in it’s character. Fluorite is a mental stone and it brings clarity to your space and life. It softens the mind and is considered a healing stone. Fluorite is great to place next to your bed on a nightstand especially if you have a hard time sleeping. It helps your mind detox at night. It’s also great for those who tend to be stressed out or those who think a lot. You can also place it in an office space to bring healthy, clean energy into the workspace.

“Each crystal has a gift, a lot of times based on how they grow and their geometric shape. Because of that crystals have personalities just like us, we are who we are no matter what clothes we put on” - Shannon Aganza

Calcite

Calcite is a metamorphic stone and is perfect if you are trying to shift something in your life. Calcite can transform very easily and you can see that in it’s geometric state. If your children have night terrors, Orange Calcite in particular is great to place in their pillowcase before bed.

IMG_4452_web.jpg

Rose Quartz

Pink Rose Quartz is considered the love stone and one of the most lovely, beneficial stones there is. It’s soft and pink in color. This is a good stone to place on a nightstand in your bedroom or even in the bathroom next to your beauty products. Place Pink Rose Quartz where you want to let love into your home.

Garnet

Garnet is the female empowerment and strength stone. It’s effective for bringing in self love. If you need a little extra strength place Garnet in your bedroom. Even more place it in your living space, a space where you gather with friends and family to promote self love and compassion.

IMG_4436_web.jpg

Clear Quartz

Clear Quartz is considered to be the purity stone and a symbol of protection. It holds information really well, but it will only hold the agenda you place in it. It speaks nicely with other crystals to help amplify their properties. Place clear quartz in a space in your home where you want to hold particular energy or bring purity, such as your living room or bedroom. Set intentions with the stone and it will hold that energy until you release it.

IMG_4511_web.jpg

IMG_4516_web.jpg

How To Clean Your Crystals

Place all your crystals in water (except for Selenite, as it will dissolve) and put them outside for about 24 hours (a full cycle of the moon and the sun). This is the best way to clean your crystals especially during the full moon.

Helpful Tip: If you’re looking for a simple way to bring crystals into your home consider coasters made from crystals or natural stone. It’s a great way to ground your space and the energy will transfer to whatever you’re drinking.

Be sure to follow Shannon on Instagram @moongathering , where she shares monthly posts on the new moon! If you’d like to see our LIVE conversation with Shannon regarding the information above click here.

We hope this post brought some clarity about crystals and their properties in your home!

If you’re looking for a new website design or perhaps just need some help with content strategy for your blog – Diane is your gal!

Are you local to San Diego? Tell us a little more about you…

I was born and raised in the Napa Valley. The majority of my family is still there (I have a huge Guamanian family), yet my parents and most of my siblings are here in San Diego.

My parents moved to San Diego when their jobs were transferred to MiraMar and North Island military bases which is what brought us down to San Diego.

How did you begin your career as an entrepreneur?

I had been working at prAna for many years and wanted a more creative job. I had a desk job so there was a lot of downtime to lose myself reading blogs about creative professionals. I wanted to be one of them.  I really liked working at prAna and so I tried to just find a position on any creative team there. But I had no idea where to begin. Yet since I was working in eCommerce, I figured I would open up my own eCommerce store to start a portfolio to hopefully get a better position once I showed them that I could create, launch and grow a brand. So that’s when I started my leather bag line Diane Serra Handmade.

This mini-brand eventually led me to interior design and many other disciplines. I learned it all and realized I had a knack for learning quickly and yet enjoying each new skill related to entrepreneurialism.

Long story short, I never did get a better job at prAna but I did learn that I love designing, namely digitally.

Over time, I decided to focus on web design, eCommerce design and digital marketing because I just love working with small businesses. It is very rewarding.

Did you go to school for Website Design and Content Writing?

Yes, I am a certified Full Stack Front End Developer. Which basically means I know how to code websites and such. Content writing I never studied but had built a skill for it naturally through writing daily on blogs I had in since 2009. Over time I would organically find clients who liked my style of writing and would hire me to build and write their digital content via blog posts and email newsletters.

It seems like you offer a lot of different services. What do people come to you for the most?

My clients are small businesses that generally need a variety of digital services for example, web design and content writing. This is because I started to encounter clients that maybe had a website but had no idea how to get people to their website. So it felt absolutely necessary that I offer both. I also offer eCommerce design and development which requires a lot more time than standard web design.

Your website design services are pretty self-explanatory (and AMAZING), do you mind touching on what type of content writing you create?

Thank you!

I am still a big fan of blogging and I read a recent study that said the businesses that are still cultivating a blog have higher conversion rates. Blogs are still a wonderful place to tell stories that will engage an audience or educate, inspire, etc. They are also very powerful for SEO because all those words on a company’s website will draw more readers. So in general, I still advocate for blogging as a content writer. For my social media clients, I aim to work with storytelling as a way to create an authentic, engaged online community.

GK8A8899Usethisone.JPG

What strategies can you offer for those struggling with their business or engagement to their website and social media platforms?

I’ll split up my advice into two sections:
Social Media -

For every social media client I’ve had, they’ve always been so worried and so concerned about the number of followers. It’s really hard to help people release the need for a large following. I always suggest to post regularly and authentically. Share your story, share your feelings, and most importantly- respond to comments. Social media is a long-ass game. It takes forever and not every business needs to be on every platform.

Getting people to your website -

I highly suggest a web-audit especially if you designed your website yourself. There may be usability issues that prevent your readers from getting the information they need to convert to a purchase or engage with your brand in general. It’s important to have a critical eye review the site and the analytics to understand where people are getting stuck and dropping off your site. It takes a bit of digging but the numbers don’t lie. I love doing website-audits!

Oh- one more bit of advice...

Blogging -

If you hate blogging, then don’t write. Don’t make yourself suffer. Hire a content writer. Just save yourself the turmoil of trying to think up blog posts and waste hours trying to craft one line of words. I’ve had clients come to me because they really want a blog but hate to write. So that’s where I come in.

What is SEO? Can you explain a little more about why this is so important to have for your business?

SEO is super cool. It requires patience and constant nurturing but it’s really worth it. In a nutshell, SEO is the strategy behind the words that bring people to your website. There is actually a lot that goes into in terms of finding keywords, using linkbacks, metatags, etc but it’s worth the investment if you want people to find your website on search engines. Having a website is just the start, getting people there is where SEO and other types of marketing are essential.

What platform do you like to work on the most?

I love this question! The platform I like to work on the most is the platform my clients need. I really advocate for my clients and small businesses in-general meaning, if your business doesn’t need a custom coded website, then we will use a template website (Squarespace or something similar, etc). I always meet my clients where they are and where they hope to be within the next few years.  If they are aiming for selling online then I will likely suggest Shopify depending on their budget.

I am comfortable designing websites on many platforms because it is my job to be flexible and knowledgeable so that I can design on whatever platform is best for each client.

For example, I’ve had many clients that have had their websites made on a platform that they cannot manage, update nor grow on. So they come to me frustrated because they likely paid too much for a site they can’t even manage. My job is to get to know each client, how much they want to manage their site after the fact (or if they want me to do it) and then educate them on the platform we are going to use and why.

I also give personal tutorials for each client to show them how to manage their site once I’ve built it. The platform used can significantly improve how my clients feel about how their business is presented online. This is the goal.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in your business?

I really love serving people and so my clients mean a lot to me. Each project teaches me a list of new things I want to improve on to become a better designer. I am also very inspired by watching the creative folks in my community making continuous efforts to grow their businesses.

How can people get in touch with you?

A CHAIR WITH PERSONALITY

We walk into the local antique shop, a staple sourcing spot for us sisters, and immediately we’re surrounded by treasures and history. As we walk through the aisles our eyes carefully skim every shelf for the perfect piece. Suddenly something catches the corner of our eyes. It’s a sweet mid-century style chair towards the back of the shop. We’re immediately drawn to its mustard colored fabric. It speaks to us as though to say “Hello, how do you do?” We’re captivated by its energy and we take a moment to guess its history and how it got there before running to the register to purchase. Who sat in this chair, where did it live, what’s it’s story? This chair undoubtably has a personality - It’s sweet in nature and approachable. We think maybe it traveled from a mid-century home in Palm Springs where it sat in a beautiful living room for most of its life. Perhaps it shared late-night dinner parties and game nights with its guests. There’s a small stain on the seat, but you can hardly see it. You can tell it was well cared for and likes red wine as much as we do. It seems regal, sophisticated and inviting.

At this point you probably think we’re crazy, but we believe chairs have personalities just like us. If you think about it, every single chair is different. Different shapes, styles, colors and stories. Are you still with us? HA! Read on to see which chair speaks to each of us in our office and what we believe their personality is.

Perhaps you can relate…

Elaina’s Chair

“She sits tall and stately in my living room, capturing your attention as soon as you walk in. She’s large and in charge and knows how to make a statement. She has slender bones, but has the ability to hold anyone who sits in her comfortably. She reclines with an ottoman that pops up from under her feet. She is tailored and sophisticated, but non-intimidating. She speaks confidence yet at the same time puts everyone in the room at ease. Milo Baughman is tattooed on her arm and she wears a mustard tweed coat. Leo is in her chart!

Susanna’s Chair

They speak to me. They’re smile-like shapes evoke happiness and pure joy. They aim to please. They are whimsical, yet elevated. They were born during the Art Deco period (circa 1930) a style that always makes my heart skip a beat. They are content and serve a basic purpose. Two halves of a circle that together equal one. Circles and round shapes symbolize visiting places and people multiple times. They are well traveled and enjoy spending quality time with family and friends. They were cast from restored wood and soft velvet fabric. Two materials that are completely different, but together create character. Wood, a hard-headed material, not easily broken. Velvet, silky to the touch and soft in nature, but tightly woven and unbelievably strong. They’re colors, burnt orange and brown, like a fall afternoon - colors that emanate feelings of happiness, family and celebration.

MEET THE MAKER - MAGGIE BOYD OF LANDMARK PLANT CO.

We first discovered this sweet, little plant oasis as we were sourcing for one of our home installs. Its location is perfectly placed on a corner right as you enter Leucadia from the highway. The fence surrounding the property is painted white with a beautiful black and white mural of cacti and succulents. Outside is a large sidewalk sign that reads “COME ON IN, WE DON’T SUCC.” – Yup that’s definitely our kind of place! As soon as you walk into the shop you’re transported to a beautiful plant paradise. It’s well decorated and perfectly curated (WARNING: you’ll want to stay all day and buy everything)! We sat down with the owner, Maggie Boyd, to chat a little about being a boss lady and share our mutual love for plants and home décor!

Can you tell us a little about your business Landmark Plant Co. and how you got started?

My fiancé and I own Landmark Plant Co., which is a full-service design and build company. We live locally in Leucadia and were looking for an office space! We drove past the property a million times, falling in love with the location every time, and when it went on the market we immediately jumped on it! We saw incredible potential in the space and decided to merge the office with a plant boutique; from there Landmark Plant Co. was born!

 What services do you offer?

We are a full landscape design and build company. We offer landscape design, interior plant scaping, maintenance services etc … We are constantly working with interior designers and architects to create cohesive designs from the inside out. In addition, we are a boutique, selling plants, pots and curated home decor items! We also offer planting at Landmark Plant Co. You can bring your own pot or of course purchase everything you need in our shop. We have materials available for you to plant at our boutique or we’ll plant it for you! We’re a one-stop-shop!

In addition, for those of you who find it overwhelming to maintain your plants, Landmark Plant Co. offers a maintenance service for your business and residential homes throughout San Diego.

What are some of the best plants to put in your home and why?

The ride or die plants that we like to suggest for any space are the Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant and the Mother-In-Law (Snake) Plant. First, both of these plants are really good air purifiers, meaning they help clean the air in your space. They are also very structured plants so they don’t take up a lot of space and they both grow fairly high, which is very nice for larger spaces. Neither require that much sunlight, which is also nice for interior spaces that have low light.

What kind of plants do you have in your own home?

I love plants (obviously) and have always had plants in my home. I have all types of plants in my home including, Fiddle Leaf Figs, Monsteras (which are some of my favorite) and I have a huge Alocasia Plant sitting in my living room that is my pride and joy! I would definitely consider myself a maximist when it comes to plants - the more the merrier!

Do you always need a drain hole in your pot?

This is a very common question that I get asked all the time. It’s really a personal preference and it depends on the environment your plant is living in! Many, if not all, exterior pots have drainage holes, specifically for rainwater. Indoors it’s not necessary to have a drainage hole, you just need to be mindful of overwatering.

Helpful Hint: Keep your plants in their nursery pots as long as possible. The nursery pots come with drainage holes and I have found, from experience, that if I keep my plants in their nursery pots they tend to last longer. If you’re bringing your new plant indoors make sure to get a liner to place under the nursery pot to avoid water from spilling everywhere. Feel free to place the nursery pot and liner in a prettier pot to make it more athletically pleasing in your space. And if you need help with that - that’s where we come in!

THE KITCHEN IS THE NEW LIVING ROOM: THREE WAYS TO STYLE OPEN SHELVING

We’re constantly designing open floor plans for our clients, the kitchen being the center point. We love it - no walls, no problem! For our clients who like to entertain they may never leave the kitchen at all. It’s the heart of the home and let’s face it the kitchen has become the new living room. While you’re cooking behind the stove, your guests can socialize with you behind the island. It’s a space where everyone wants to hang out. In kitchen designs today the open shelving has replaced cabinetry, which is both a blessing and a curse. It’s easy for them to get cluttered, however they also allow you to create personality in your home. Start with a blank slate and tell your story. Now that the kitchen is the new living room, try incorporating family photos, old books or treasures from your travels. Yes, we understand they need to be functional too, so throw the everyday plates and cups in the mix.

To help you get creative and inspired in your home we’ve styled our own kitchen shelves with three different personalities. We’d love hear which you are more drawn to!

THE CALIFORNIA DREAMER

When we styled these shelves we were channeling all the California mid century vibes. We threw in some local art that we’ve collected over the years, some vintage books and baskets from the flea markets. We mixed in some blush pink teak bowls from our travels to Bali. We added some vintage jars to add a pop of color and of course a small palm tree to complete the look!

THE OLD SOUL

This one is for all of our old souled mamas out there who love to shop at antique stores and thrift shops. You thrive on culture and history. You have some old black and white family photos and grandma’s china, mixed in with your existing plates and mugs. Mixing old with new is always okay in our book! Throw in that souvenir or vintage art from your trip to Europe. Finish this look off with gold or brass accents to catch the eye and warm up your space! This look is undoubtedly a conversation starter.

THE BELIEVER

If you like things clean and simple with just a subtle pop of color this look is for you! We love the white on white look, but “believe” us, mixing it up with different textures of white and a pop of color makes this look unique. We’ve added our white plates and bowls, but we’ve also thrown in some white mugs (with black accents), as well as some clear glassware to add texture. In this look, you’ll notice subtle pops of color, such as the vintage books and baskets. These pieces accent the centerpiece of your display - a piece that scream color, but also has a place in your heart. For us, we chose to display a blue dragon from our travels to Argentina. He symbolizes protection and is the perfect accent in this space!

INNOVATIVE WAYS TO USE THE SAME OL' TILE

You’re ready for a bathroom renovation and want a sexy, unique tile design on your floors and backsplash. You’re craving something different than all the trendy tile we see plastered all over Pinterest and Instagram. It’s easy to follow the trend, but if you’re looking for something a little bolder and unique keep reading. We’re notorious for breaking the rules and getting creative with design. We love stepping out of the box and exploring new ways to use the same materials we all know and love.

Let’s start with the infamous subway tile. How many times have you seen white subway tile in a bathroom or kitchen design? It’s definitely a classic design, but can be used in many ways. Try switching up the pattern, maybe create a herringbone design, try mixing different colors or even mixing it with other tiles. If you just love the look of subway tile, but want something a little different here’s some inspiration and alternative tiles you can use in your design!

Next, let’s play with penny tile. Penny tile is super versatile. We’ve seen it done so many ways, specifically with black and white tile. Try playing with a section of your floor or wall and use one color or pattern. Try mixing penny tile with other tiles, create words or outline a space. Penny tile is a fun way to get the pattern or design you want but can’t seem to find. Here’s some inspiration as well as some other tiles that play off the classic penny tile design.

We’re suckers for a good 3D tile. A beautiful 3D tile can completely transform a space! If you like the classic hexagon or scallop shaped tiles, try something with a little more depth! You’ll be surprised what it can do to your space!

Application is everything! Sure, we are used to seeing tile on bathroom walls to protect the dry wall from collecting mold and in the kitchen as a backsplash for easy clean up, but there are so many other ways where you can use tile in your home! Get creative! Be bold! We love using tile as decorative stair risers or even in the pool! And don’t forget a table top or headboard, replace it with tile! No one else will have it and it’s unique to your home!

We hope these ideas inspire you to have fun with tile in your designs!

Be bold. Be different. Set the trend, don’t follow it!
